The State Forestry Contest was held at Mountain Gateway Community College in Clifton Forge, Virginia on April 24, 2024. The forestry contest tests the FFA member’s knowledge on tree identification, equipment identification, estimating volume of trees, and reading topographic maps. Three Buckingham teams were able to compete at the Virginia State Forestry Contest. The junior and senior division teams qualified for the event in October at the Southeast Area Contest.
The junior division team of Ryland Carter, Luke Gilliam, Trenton Ragland and Mollie Walker. The team placed 5th. Ryland Carter placed 2nd as an individual.
In the senior division the team of Sarah Bryant, Andrew Dorrier, Noah Jones, and Grace Martin placed 4th overall. Noah Jones placed 8th overall. In addition to the parts of the contest listed above, members of the senior division had to explain their choice of removing or leaving trees in their timber stand based on a scenario, estimating distance by pacing, identify wood species based on a sample, and identify insects and disorders of trees.
The Buckingham 4-H team consisted of Luke Llewellyn, Collin Snoddy, Ava Taylor, and Vaiden Taylor. The team placed 3rd overall with Collin placing 10th, Ava 9th, Vaiden 8th, and Luke 6th.
They completed the following events; knowledge test, tree identification, topographic maps, compass and pacing, and tree volume.
