FFA at State Fair

The Buckingham Senior FFA Chapter participated in the 2023 State Fair of Virginia, competing in several contests. The State Fair Contests are a great way to allow FFA members to showcase their knowledge and skills in that particular area. 

On Monday, September 25, Jenna Oliver and Amiah Porter competed in the Senior Division of the Agriscience Demonstration Contest. During their demonstration, they explained how to give your dog a check-up. They placed 20th overall.

The Forestry Field Day team competed on Tuesday, September 26th.  Team members of the junior team were Ryland Carter, Luke Gilliam, Devin King, Katie Page, Trent Ragland, Jackson Smith, and Tuck Wooten. Devin King placed 5th in the bow saw event and Luke Gilliam placed 4th in the pulpwood toss. The Team placed 11th overall in the contest.

The Jr. Forester’s Contest was also held on Tuesday, September, 26th. The Jr. Forester’s Contest is composed of multiple events including identification of trees, equipment, insects, tree diseases, a written exam, and estimating distance by pacing. The Junior Division team placed 4th overall with team members Ryaland Carter, Luke Gilliam, Trent Ragland, and Katie Page. Individually, Ryland Carter placed 3rd overall winning a $100 scholarship through the Virginia State Fair. Senior Division team members included Sarah Bryant, Ben Giiliam, Grace Martin, and Alexandra Morris. The team placed 2nd overall with Ben Gilliam placing 8th and Sarah Bryant placing 9th individually.

On Friday, September 29th  the Horse Hippology Contest was held. Sarah Bryant, Jenna Oliver, Amiah Porter, Piper Scialdo participated in the senior division event placing 7th overall. Cayden Parrish also competed as an individual. The Horse Hippology Contest tested the identification of horse breeds and tack, judging horses based on their conformation, and knowledge of the equine industry.  

The Skill-a-thon Contest was also held on September 29th. Kipp Martin, Leigha Pleasants, Thomas Snoddy, and Collin Snoddy competed in the beef cattle competition. They had to identify equipment, identify feeds, judge a class of cattle, identify cuts of meats, and take a written exam about the beef industry.
